After playing the first hour and a half of the game, I can safely say that this is one experience you want to go into fresh -- the less you know about the plot the better it will be. Instead, this hands-on preview will focus on how much the game has been improved for the sequel. And boy has it ever been improved. Just about everything was sent back to the drawing board to look for ways it could be made better.

Once again stepping into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, gamers command their crew on a suicide mission in space. Players must assemble their squad from amongst the galaxy's most powerful mystics, geniuses, and convicts and lead them on a suicide mission to discover why humans are vanishing from the galaxy. The success of the mission hinges on the squad recruited and their loyalty to the mission. Shepard's future depends on it.

A very original experience which was refreshing in this age of WWII and other common themes of FPS especially. The graphics are beautiful, the creatures imaginative, the action heart pounding and the variety is engaging. There was a lot of opportunity to play Kong sprinkled through the game so I'm not sure what others are saying. It was linear, but it did what it was intended to do. It wasn't supposed to be a game where the environment was wide open. It is a game where you are placed on a path leading to successive missions/situations/confrontations which lead to an end. During that time, the experience is very fun while you fight giant millipedes, dinosaurs and other savage creatures which act and look simply amazing. It also balanced nicely with opportunities to fight as Kong. This game is much like a great roller coaster. It stays on the track while giving you a crazy ride.

Set a few years after the defeat of Megatron in the first game/movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen reveals that the threat from the Decepticons is in fact, far from ended. Since the time of the epic and apparently not so final battle between the two Transformer leaders, Decepticons have started popping up again all over Earth in alarming numbers. And now, a mysterious object from space seems destined to shift the balance of power and give the upper hand to the Decepticons.
Mission-centric Gameplay
Unlike Activision's Transformers: The Game, released along side the original movie back in 2007, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen relies less on open-world gameplay and more on structured, but varied mission play. The variety in these missions comes from the fact that players can align themselves with either the Autobots or Decepticons, and that the available missions both parallel the events of the movie, as well as events unique to the game. During these missions players will be able to play as a variety of different Transformers from either side of the conflict, and with success in mission play will be able to unlock additional Transformers and earn points used to upgrade your selected faction. Playable characters include on the Autobot side: Optimus Prime, Iron Hide, Breakaway, Bumblebee, and Ratchet; and from the Decepticon side: Starscream, Sideways (a new character), Grindor, Long Haul, and Megatron. Additional Transformer types will be available in multiplayer modes. The game features a simple control toggle that not only allows for quick switching between mech, vehicle and weapon forms, but also allows for a more easy learning curve of the acrobatic moves from the movie.

As Beowulf, players lead their men, called thanes, into battle, slay the Titans of a dying age and crush the enemies that threaten to annihilate both their kingdom and people. Only then, when Beowulf looks Destiny in the eye, will he know what kind of hero he has truly become. Army of up to 12 thanes to unlock as players increase their heroic experience (by saving thanes, killing giant monsters, etc.). Players use the thane army to their advantage by giving orders, assigning positions, tailoring weapons to the situation or enemy and by triggering in-game mechanisms. The thane army evolves with upgradeable weapons (swords, mace and spears), skills and abilities. Use legacy experience points to gain thanes, replace weapons and upgrade Carnal abilities. Carnal Power allows the use of stronger attacks and special weapons. Carnal upgrades include less daze after use and prolonged use of Carnal Fury. But if used too much, there will be grave consequences. Dynamic combat system including combos, parries and increasing skills as the player progresses. Grab ability allows Beowulf to hold on to walls or climb, as well as fight up close with visceral hand-to-hand combat against enemies and giant monsters. [Ubisoft]

The final gameplay dynamic features Lyra's truth-telling Alethiometer. Even though these segments were repetitive, they were at least a touch more interesting than their counterparts. Throughout your journey, you actually collect the meanings behind the Alethiometer's symbols, which you can then use to divine the answers to questions. However, if you haven't yet uncovered a symbol's meaning, you can guess at it. For example, say the one keyword you're missing is "Sin." You can actually look through all the different symbols and choose the one you feel best communicates that word. In this case, the answer would be the Apple, but there are many others to choose from. This aspect of the game easily had the most promise and could have been even better with more polish and depth.

We should quickly mention now that if this does sound like your type of game (somehow), you may want to consider playing it on a 360 controller. The keyboard works fine, but controlling a platformer with anything other than a joystick can sometimes be tricky.

Besides lousy gameplay, The Golden Compass has little else worth mentioning. The graphics, regardless of which system you play on, don't push the hardware at all. The sound is almost never properly synchronized with what's happening on the screen, and the overall presentation is embarrassingly cheap. Truthfully, there's only one genuinely great thing about this game: the orchestral score. We were shocked at how beautiful the music was -- music that was written specifically for the game. It was almost surreal to hear such majestic, charming pieces streaming from the speakers when the game itself is pitiful.

Even if you were completely charmed by Philip Pullman's work or enjoyed the movie adaptation, there's absolutely no reason to give this game a try. Even the music, as pretty as it is, can't redeem such poor gameplay and atrocious presentation. There have been a ton of great game releases recently, so just give one of those a try instead. We assure you that you're not missing anything by sitting this one out.
