Final Fantasy (2010) XIII X360

In Final Fantasy XIII, players take control of six different characters with the sharp-eyed Lightning taking the "lead role." Although the game does tend to stress Lightning as the primary heroine, Final Fantasy XIII is reminiscent of Final Fantasy VI in that you control all the characters at different times and you jump between the groups frequently. This multi-story approach, as well as a clever use of flashbacks, makes Final Fantasy XIII's story quite enjoyable, at least in terms of its structure.
Final Fantasy XIII can tiptoe (or "stumble," depending on the scene) into the melodramatic, but fans of the series shouldn't be too surprised. What was more intriguing to me, beyond the standard growth of the characters, was the dynamic established between the two worlds of Final Fantasy XIII -- Cocoon and Pulse -- as well as the relationship between humans and their fal'Cie counterparts. Like various religions of the world, the mythology of Final Fantasy XIII incorporates god-like beings (the fal'Cie) that protect humanity. These themes are extremely important to the plot of Final Fantasy XIII and I very much enjoyed them.
The game also benefits from its cast, and all the members are voiced by some very talented people. Even the actors providing work for the side characters and villains do a tremendous job.
Of course, a role-playing game would be nothing without a solid battle system, and fortunately Final Fantasy XIII delivers. What starts out as an extremely simple, menu-driven system slowly becomes one of the most complex, challenging systems I've ever experienced in a Final Fantasy title. At the system's root is the classic ATB (Active Time Battle) principle. When standing in a neutral position, a gauge fills above your list of commands. This gauge is segmented, so as it fills, more segments are available for use. Every action a character can take requires the expenditure of a certain number of segments from the gauge. This attack queue system is much preferable to selecting one command at a time, as it gives players the ability to build combos and multitask when the going gets rough.


Although you only control one character at a time, the actions of all three of your party members are dictated by their roles. There are six roles in Final Fantasy XIII and all six characters have access to each role by the end of the game (though they are gifted in three of the six). Unlike past Final Fantasy games that use a job system, Final Fantasy XIII's roles are all invaluable and must be used effectively to survive. These roles ultimately affect how you play the game, as someone controlling a Sentinel will be constantly provoking and distracting enemies while a Medic, alternatively, will be healing. These roles keep battles fresh and fun, which is vital in a good RPG.
But before entering battle, players must set up a deck of Paradigms, which is the fancy way of referring to a grouping of roles. The Aggression Paradigm, for example, refers to a party composed of two Commandos and one Ravager. The Combat Clinic Paradigm stands for two Medics and one Sentinel.
By preparing several Paradigms outside of battle, players can switch roles on the fly during combat in order to best meet the situation on the field. This might sound like a simple gimmick, but it's absolutely not. Switching Paradigms is critical to surviving in Final Fantasy XIII and it adds an element of tension to what could have been a mundane system.

Xpand Rally puts you behind the wheel of a tuned-up WRC machine in over seventy races in five sceneries, using a modified version of the Chrome engine with fully movable obstacles, dynamic day time and weather changes, full collisions simulation and a complex car damage system. The driver can even sustain leg injuries and concussions. There is much more freedom than in other rally games. In the freestyle mode, for example, there are no invisible borders, you can compete off-road with no restrictions to tracks.

Aside from the traditional race, you can build-up a rally career, similar to NFSU, where you work your way up as a rookie. You need to spend your money wisely to take care off repairs and tune your car with over 800 parts. Xpand Rally does not have an official rally license, but includes 35 sports cars over 8 divisions, with some funky models such as tiny coopers or terrain vehicles. There are two driving modes: arcade and simulation with different damage systems and steering models.

ChromEd, a full game editor loaded with tutorial and templates, has been attached to the game. You can edit existing tracks or create new ones and even import your own car designs straight from 3D Studio MAX. .

You play as Robin Hood; as you start the game, you’ll be defending Sherwood Forest from the Sheriff of Nottingham. This first portion effectively serves as a tutorial before you take over the entire region of Nottingham and eventually go to war with the lords in the other areas of England. The reason the entire island is in turmoil is that King Richard has been abducted and is up for ransom in Austria. Richard’s evil brother, Prince John, has declared Richard dead and seized the throne of England for himself. You are tasked with gathering up enough money to pay Richard’s ransom, raising armies of your own to fight for control of each of England’s counties, and eventually attacking Prince John and overthrowing him from his seat of power in southern England.

At the start of every turn, you’ll collect taxes from your counties; the more counties you control, the more money you bring in. The gold you collect you can use to raise armies for your campaign forces or county garrisons, to build strongholds on your provinces, or to partially pay off King Richard’s ransom. If Maid Marian is around, you can send her to spy on an enemy province, which will give you a permanent look at the troop strength in that territory. Once you’re done reinforcing your army or your defenses, you will have a few basic choices. You can go on a raid in one of your enemy’s provinces, you can hold a jousting tournament with Sir Ivanhoe serving as your proxy, or you can attack a neighboring province with your army to bring it under your control. Each choice opens up a different minigame.

Postal 2’s gameplay never manages to do any better than the game’s clever initial concept, either. Though you can explore the rest of the city between missions, there isn’t much reason to do so. The entire single-player game can be finished in about 10 hours. Once you’ve finished that (and have possibly conducted a few murderous rampages to see what they’re like), you’ll probably be done with the game. Unlike Grand Theft Auto III, Postal 2 has no cars to drive, though decorative cars are scattered around the city and create fairly large explosions when destroyed, much like the exploding barrels found in other first-person shooters. This should be a lesson for future clockwork city game designers: Urban mayhem is much less satisfying without vehicles you can drive.

The nonviolent solutions to Postal 2’s mission goals aren’t in any way interesting, and the combat is much too sloppy to be engaging. Fighting generally involves running up to an enemy and discharging your weapon as close to his or her face as possible. According to the game’s documentation, Postal 2 supports a locational damage system, but it’s spotty at best. A bullet to the head rarely appears to do more damage than a shot to the leg. Your computer-controlled enemies don’t exhibit much grace under fire–they’ll generally shoot at you from a fixed position or run right for you, though they’ll occasionally flee in terror (and while fleeing, they’ll periodically peer back over their shoulders, which is a nice little detail). Otherwise, most of Postal 2’s combat seems like it could have come straight out of a run-of-the-mill shooter from five years ago.
