Age of Kings is the second installment in the Age of Empires series, a projected four game series following the history of mankind. It picks up where the expansion pack The Rise of Rome leaves off and continues well into the late Middle Ages, covering the period from about 450 to 1450. Although it is meant as a sequel to Age of Empires, the two games will not be linked together in any way.

A lot's been added here. The economic side of the game has received a lot of development. It's no longer about hoarding money only to spend it on troops. The Units are all also new as are the available controls. When the game is finally released, we may also see a more flexible and intelligent AI. Age of Kings also promises the added convenience of customizable hot-keys, improved navigation points and production queues. There will also be female peasants. PC doesn't just stand for personal computer, baby.

You are put at the head of one of thirteen civilizations: Britons, Byzantines, Celts, Chinese, Franks, Goths, Japanese, Mongols, Persians, Saracens, Teutons, Turks and Vikings. Each civilization will have unique strengths and weaknesses as well as some unique units. There will also be a unique wonder each civilization can produce.

Age of Empires III - PC

The 24-mission campaign is very well designed. Divided into three large acts, it tells the story of three generations of the Black family. First Morgan Black, a Knight of St. John races to the New World to stop the Spanish from seizing a powerful natural wonder. Next, Morgan's grandson John and his Native American allies find themselves in the Seven Year's War. The final act shows John's granddaughter Amelia as the head of a railroad company making their way west.

I won't spoil the particulars of the story here but a common quest and a common enemy unite all three acts. The connections aren't always clear at first, but the associations start to build as the game goes on. Putting the pieces together isn't terribly hard but it gives a nice sense of purpose to the whole game and keeps you invested in the action.

While we're talking about the game's story, it's refreshing to see a game that covers this era of warfare without referencing either Napoleon or the American Revolution. While both are fertile ground for strategy game developers, it's nice to get something a little different this time around. Meeting Washington and Bolivar and taking part in the Seven Year's War adds a little authenticity as well as variety. On the other hand, some of the choices -- like finding Russians in Colorado -- may leave gamers scratching their heads in wonder.

The range of missions is pretty broad. There are plenty of defense missions where you have to protect a given structure or a whole town from enemy assault. In other cases you'll have to destroy or capture key structures. Along the way there are plenty of other objectives: rescuing captured settlers, seizing trading posts, liberating Native American settlements and a whole host of other tasks. Better still, many missions combine a variety of these objectives at once. While most of the missions let you build a base and start collecting resources, there are some missions where you have to make do with a set number of troops.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

For those unfamiliar with the Metal Gear series (shame on you!), here's a little background info. You assume the role of Solid Snake, co-founder of activist group Philanthropy, and ex-member of government special forces group, Fox-Hound. Your goal is to raise the public's awareness about the different Metal Gears (giant mech-like machines of mass destruction) that are created in hopes that their development will cease altogether. The other co-founder of Philanthropy, Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, was an engineer on the Metal Gear REX (from MGS1) project, and eventually switched sides after realizing the real reason Metal Gear was created. Every Metal Gear game involves some sort of new Metal Gear that is being built, and your mission to stop it.

Gameplay

The unique aspect of the Metal Gear games is that they promote stealth over action. The best way through a level is to do it without being seen or heard. To aid you in sneaking past the enemy, there is a radar in the upper-right hand corner of the screen that displays your position, as well as enemy positions and their field of vision. If you are seen, your radar is disabled and the enemy will call for backup. If that happens, you must either try and kill them all, or run away hoping they don't shoot you down before you reach a safe hiding place.

Being seen is not the only thing you have to worry about. The enemy also has ears, and if you make too much noise, they will go investigate the source of the sound. Walking on certain surfaces, shooting an un-silenced gun, leaving a blood trail, or even sneezing from a cold will get you in big trouble. Also, leaving a dead body lying around will alert the enemies of an intruder if seen, while knocking them out with a tranquilizer will cause their fellow soldiers to wake them up. Luckily, you can hide bodies in dark corners or lockers, and you can also throw them off the side of the ship in the tanker chapter.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines places you in the command of one to six soldiers (known as, naturally, the commandos), all with their own sets of skills, strengths, and weaknesses. The game throws a monkey wrench into standard real-time strategy conventions by eschewing such typical features as resource accumulation and unit creation. Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive, in changing the way real-time strategy games are played, have molded Commandos: BEL into a far more tactical and strategic game than its competitors in the genre.

Featuring 24 World War II-based missions, which take place in a variety of locations--including deserts, dams, and snow-covered terrain--Commandos: BEL offers a wide variety of mission objectives, with game play emphasizing the dynamics between the six commandos. For instance, Tread's skills lie in driving, Spooky carries disguises and spy equipment for infiltration missions, and Fins works best in the comfort of water.

Stealth techniques dominate most missions; a handy line-of-sight display confirms whether your commandos are hidden from view. In some missions, alerting enemy guards could prove costly. In others, though, offensive tactics provide the greatest--and easiest--success. The diverse strategies employed in Commandos: BEL create a unique and rewarding gaming experience.

Following the success of Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive created a smaller--and far more challenging--version of the same game with a few tweaks and improvements. Though Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty appears on the surface to be an expansion pack, it doesn't require its predecessor to function; Commandos: BCD is a stand-alone product. Commandos: BCD's gameplay follows the same style as its predecessor. Though classified as a real-time strategy game, Commandos: BCD foregoes the use of resource collectors, buildings, and unit creation--elements seen in games like Command and Conquer and StarCraft. Instead, players assume control of one to six distinctive commandos, such as the marksman Duke and the explosives expert Inferno, and use them collectively to solve puzzle-like combat and stealth situations. Completing the game's eight World War II-based missions requires specialized use of each of the six commandos as well as making the most out of limited ammunition against typically overwhelming odds. Though the units, both friendly and enemy, are rather small, they're easily distinguishable against the lush, detailed environments. The interface, mostly unchanged from the first game, remains intuitive. When you've completed the relatively brief single-player campaign, you can team up with others through both local area network and Internet play via Eidos's Web site.
